Enjoying Christmas

Sir,—Christmas can be whatever we wish it to be. Kay Emerald’s rather cynical perspective (“The Press,” December 22), makes it sound a set-piece. Celebrations, for whatever purpose, are a necessary and delightful part of living fully. As another “middle-aged wife,” I

can say I enjoy Christmas — not necessarily all the tinsel and razzmatazz, certainly not the commercialism. I enjoy coming home and finding my youngest son has decorated the Christmas tree, as a surprise, I enjoy hearing him closeted with his older sister whispering and laughing over'wrapping presents. I enjoy hearing my two older sons catching up on a year’s talking, I enjoy ringing or visiting friends. Mind you, I enjoy these things throughout the year, but Christmas gives an extra warm glow to it all. Sentiment? Humbug? Never. Have a happy Christmas season. — Yours, etc,. JILL WILCOX. December 22, 1984.
