Labour and school integration
Sir,—The Minister of Education, after a closed-door meeting on integrated education, stated that the Labour Party was “committed to integration.” The present Government exhorts us to consider realities. It extolls consensus. Consensus is not a product of closed doors or closed books. The Integration Act was conceived in a secretive fashion by a “nervous” Labour Government. The Nelson system of
free, secular education had proved itself successful in producing the tolerant, resourceful New Zealander. The Integration Act was not the result of research but of skilful, well-timed pressures. The purpose was not to free the child’s mind, but .to possess and programme it so that what is euphemistically termed “choice” is, in reality, the dictate of an authority. History reveals the tragic influences of inflexible religions. Many of us who support the Labour Party do so because of its commitment to democratic principles and condemn its bowing to undemocratic forces. — Yours, etc., T. G. CUTLER. December 20, 1984.
