Shipping news New Navy Antarctic supply vessel
The United States Navy’s new Antarctic supply vessel Greenwave is expected in Lyttelton to pick up stores and personnel on January 25. The ice-strengthened cargo ship has been leased by the Navy’s military sealift command as a replacement for its former vessel, the Southern Cross, which has been a familiar caller at Lyttelton since she first called in January, 1981.
The Greenwave was built in West Germany in 1980 and according to the U.S. Navy is considerably larger than the 9832-ton Southern Cross. The vessel has two aft engines and four cargo holds. It also has its own cargo cranes which is expected to improve
cargo handling at the ice wharf in Antarctica. As a private vessel the Greenwave has been leased to the Navy for 4Vs years and has been reflagged and renamed for her new role. The vessel’s lease starts on January 2. She is expected to leave Lyttelton for Antarctica about January 27 and will be berthed at the ice wharf from February 2 to February 12. The Greenwave will return to Lyttelton about February 17. ARRIVALS Monday Mys Tichy (7.30 a m.), 2327, sea (Scales). Tarihiko (7.30 a.m.), 1511, New Plymouth (S.C.N.Z.).
