Lissom Lass looks top chance in Wairio Cup

Special correspondent Invercargill Lissom Lass, probably the most improved galloper in Southland this season, might have the measure of a useful field in the Wairio Cup at Invercargill today. The talented Sovereign Eagle mare, which has won three races this season and was unbeatable at the twoday Southland meeting last month, will be ridden by Chris Johnson.

Lissom Lass and Johnson combined for a dashing success in the open grade on the second day of the Southland meeting. The ease with which she won an open barrier trial at Riverton 10 days ago suggested Lissom Lass had gone from strength to strength. There are few more underrated gallopers in commission. The club president, Mr John Carran, has ideal material in North Range.

The big Vai Du Fier gelding hinted that he was on the verge of winning form when a good second to Boa’N Arrow in the Tapanui Cup at his last start. North Range has made gradual improvement of late. Wheatbix was battling 600 m out in the Tapanui Cup but plugged on fairly enough for third. He has been placed in all four of his latest starts. Noble Boa, and Ruby’s

Boy are others which have been racing well enough this season to add interest to the finish. Chook A Rook, which has won two of his three starts this season, looks a likely proposition for the Longwood Motors Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. double. Peat, Super Dude, Noble Princess and Kerry Siobhan are others which will not lack support.
