The appearance of some well-performed mares in the $7OOO Miss Scenicland 7000 will highlight the second day of the Westland Racing Club’s summer meeting at Hokitika today. With such an attractive stake and a free service to the Inglewood Stud’s stallion, Cocky Golfer (valued at $2000), attached to the event, it is not surprising that the club has attracted a talented line-up for its 1650 m weight-for-age event, with favouritism certain to be disputed by three smart Riccarton visitors in Jendra, In the Glen and Buffy Beaufort.

Steady rain on Saturday evening and yesterday should have had a loosening effect on the Hokitika course, which provided rather holding ground on Saturday, and conditions should prove ideal for the Vicki Willis-trained Jendra.

The diminutive daughter of Sabratel was campaigned in the Central Districts last month but invariably struck summer-like footing, her most respectable achievement on the sojourn being a second placing behind the promising Yale over 1600 m at Otaki.

Willis is pleased with the mare’s progress since her latest outing, at Trentham at Labour Day Week-end, and she seems likely to start as favourite in her attempt to repeat her success in the corresponding event last year. John Dowling, who will ride Jendra today, partnered her in an 800 m gallop between races on Saturday, the mare bettering 40s for her final 600 m striding out in convincing fashion.

In the Glen was shaping as one of the South Island’s leading New Zealand Cup prospects until she performed well below expectations in the Benson and Hedges Gold Cup on November 3.

The daughter of In the Purple jarred up badly in that event, forcing her trainer. Garth Jackson, to alter his plans and map out a fresh programme for the bay. In the Glen has progressed satisfactorily since the Riccarton event, according to Jackson, and a big run is expected from her as she prepares for next Monday’s $7700 D.B. Greymouth Cup. An impressive first-day winner, Worldly Mist, has drawn wide but has to be respected, while Dios and Ranfurly Lass went well enough on Saturday to warrant some consideration as place chances. The Miss Scenicland is the first leg of the T.A.B. double, the second leg being the Freitas Timbers Handicap, in which Steel King

stands out against a very ordinary line-up.
