Wide range of new products on market
A wide range of new products is available to the consumer this month.
The Tui Co-operative Dairy Company, Ltd, has released a new dairy product, Tararua Cultured Buttermilk. Buttermilk is a byproduct of the butter-mak-ing process, to which a yoghurt-type culture has been added. It is widely used in North America and Europe and has gained acceptance with the new emphasis on health foods. The main attraction of the buttermilk is that it is very low in fat. It can be used as a drink or with cereals and when used in cooking it produces lighter results than ordinary milk. This is the first time that buttermilk has been available on a national scale. It comes in a one-litre plastic container with a recommended retail price of $1.90. It has a shelf-life of four to six weeks and must be kept refrigerated. The Tai Tapu Dairy Company, Ltd, is the Christchurch agent for the buttermilk, which is available from many health food stores, delicatessens and some supermarket delicatessens. Long-life Cream Canterbury Dairy Farmers, Ltd, has a longlife whipping and pouring cream on the market. Crown Cream is produced in twin-pack plastic pots on the company’s form-fill-and-seal machine. “This method results in a cream that keeps its quality for many weeks under refrigeration without preservatives,” said Mr G. B. Lorigan, the company’s general manager. The cream’s popularity had been such that the company expected cream
consumption in New Zealand to increase, he said. The company also planned to export the product. The 300 g (half-pint) twinpacks have a suggested retail of 69c. Health bread For the health-food conscious, a new type of bread, made of yoghurt and linseed, is available at many health food shops and some supermarkets. About $1.49 a loaf, it is more expensive than the standard bread, but this is because of the cost of some ingredients. The yoghurt gives a subtle flavour, lighter texture, and a moister loaf. It also gives the bread a longer shelf life. Natural gluten is used to ensure that the bread does not crumble; it is low in salt and contains no added fat. Other ingredients include blue borage honey, malt, kibbled wheat, kibbled rye, stone-ground rye meal, wholemeal flour and stoneground purple wheat. These combine to give a coarser loaf with a nutty flavour. The new bread has been developed by Wayne of Taurean Products. Crispbread Also in the health food line, Griffins has released a new “traditional crisp- . bread” which has “the goodness of wholewheat and bran.” The company describes it as a unique product made from ingredients high in dietary fibre. The suggested retail price is $1 a packet. Hash Browns A new product under the Jim Bull label is shredded Hash Browns. These are a type of potato cake made
from shredded potatoes. They can be deep fried or pan fried and are a versatile produce in that they can be served on any occasion that potatoes are used. Hash Browns come in a 380 g pack of four with a suggested retail price of $2.85.
Snap-lock bags The manufacturers of the “Glad” range of plastic bags have released a new type called “snap-lock” bags, which have a resealable open edge. Two sizes are available — sandwich and food storage. The resealability of the bags means they can be used three or four times. The recommended retail price for a pack of 25 sandwich bags is $1.04 and for a pack of 15 food storage bags is $1.35. Air Freshener A new type of air freshener, from Reckitt and Colman, Ltd, will be available, in shops from next month. “Air-O-Zone is a dry air and fabric deodoriser. It is a dry spray formulation which does not contain the water of the conventional fresheners; (If sprayed against a glass window, it
will not show up as a wet patch.) It can be sprayed near food or polished surfaces without contamination or staining. It has been available on the American markets for about a year and the Australian market for about three months, with much success in both countries. Air-O-Zone comes in three fragrances: Talc Fresh, Wood Forest, and Spring Blossom. A 200 ml can has a suggested retail price of $2.80.
