New Tutu job The Rt Rev, Desmond Tutu, who won the 1984 Nobel Peace Prize for his campaign against racism in South Africa, has been named as the first black Anglican Bishop of Johannesburg. Archdeacon Frederick Vaughan-Jones said that the appointment had been made at an Anglican synod of bishops meeting at a Church retreat in the Orange Free State. — Johannesburg. Babies killed A poor French farmer has been jailed for eight years and his wife given a fiveyear suspended sentence for killing seven of their newborn children in a desperate attempt to control the size of their family. Jean-Pierre Leymarie, aged 45, and his wife, Rolande, aged 32, told the Court that they had never heard of modern birth control methods and had killed the babies because they could not feed them. Neighbours who said that they only gradually realised that Mrs Leymarie had been hiding her pregnancies alerted the police, who found a mass grave on the couple’s farm. — Tulle. Pounds of anger British politicians, newspapers, shopkeepers, and the public have united to condemn the change to a £1 coin by the Finance Minister, Mr Nigel Lawson. “Does Nigel Lawson really want to go down in history as the Chancellor ,of the Exchequer who dipped, into the ' nation’s pockets and took away the pound note?” asked “The Sun” newspaper. The pound coin, made of an alloy of copper, nickel, and zinc, has been treated with disdain since it was introduced 18 months ago. A black American novelist, Chester Himes, aged 75, a leading writer of thrillers, has died in Spain. Himes, who had lived in the village of Moraira for 15 years, died of bonescancer. — Teulada.
