Ship sails off into adventure

NZPA-Reuter Hull The Sir Walter Raleigh, with Prince Charles at the helm, sailed for North Carolina yesterday at the beginning of a four-year, 192,000 km voyage to bring a taste of adventure to thousands of young people around the world.

The ship — which will serve as a floating headquarters, scientific laboratory, and supply ship for some 4000 youngsters who will participate in the project — sailed from Hull, in north-east England with 20 young adventurers aboard. The crew from the United States, New Zealand, Japan, Malaysia, Canada and Britain were sailing first to Beaufort, North Carolina, to participate in the 400th anniversary celebrations of the founding of Englishspeaking North America by the sixteenth century explorer, Sir Walter Raleigh. Prince Charles, patron of the expedition, left the vessel soon after she got under way.

During the project, called “Operation Raleigh,” the Sir Walter Raleigh will circumnavigate the world, exploring polar regions, deserts, and jungles. Five ships will join her at various points on her journey.
