Changes to bus routes undecided
Proposed changes to three bus routes remained undecided after a special meeting called by the Christchurch Transport Board yesterday. About 35 people filled the public gallery to hear submissions supporting and opposing proposed extensions to the Northcote, Bryndwr, Mays Road, and Avonside routes. Only the latter, after an extensive debate behind closed doors, was given final approval. This means the route will now extend westward, from its existing terminus at the corner of Withells Road and Stavely Street to Woodbury Street and Ansonby Street.
Decisions on the other proposed extensions will be referred back to board staff for further investigation and consultation. Voting on both resolutions was unanimous, said the chairman of the board, Mr Patrick Neary. Submissions were also made by Mr Norman Webb, on behalf of the Canterbury Aged People’s Welfare Council, giving general support for all service extensions.
Access to public transport, particularly buses, was important for the elderly because it allowed them to be independent, he said.
