Psychology for officers

PA Wellington The Ministry of Transport has hired a psychologist to teach its traffic officers how to avoid being assaulted. In the year ended March, 285 officers were assaulted, according to the Ministry’s annual report to Parliament. The report said that

officers would face increased risks because of the stepped up campaign against drinking drivers. A psychologist, Mr Ross Gilmour; said he had been working on the training programme for about two years and had concluded from research that a polite and formal manner was the

most acceptable. Trainee officers were already working under Mr Gilmour’s guidance and next year all staff would be advised how best to approach motorists, how. to get their message across, how to recognise trouble brewing, and how to defuse it.
