Mixed bowls day
It was a mixed day for the Carter family of Fendalton in Christchurch bowls championships yesterday.
Frank Carter, who won the men’s champion-of-champions singles some five years ago, failed to win a match in the qualifying rounds of the open singles. His wife, Gwen, was beaten in the semi-finals of the women’s centre singles, but their son, Chris, had quite a rewarding day. Against difficult opponents, he registered four straight wins in the open singles to qualify easily, the best victory being a 21-15 success against Bill McDonald (Spreydon), . a previous champion and the runner-up last year. Nihety-six, from an entry of 272, accomplished the qualifying mark of three wins or better and they will continue when the tournament goes into sudden-death play next Wednesday. Norm Wales (Woolston Park), Bill Newburgh (Elmwood), Duncan White and Elwyn Judson (both Papanui), joined Frank Carter as recent singles champions to make an early exit. However, the biggest Surprise was the elimination of Leon Jones (Southbridge),
one of Christchurch's bestperformed bowlers of recent seasons. His hopes of reaching the second day disappeared when Ron Bodger (Woolston Park) beat him 21-20 in the third round.
