Watsons’ rare double
As Ken Watson was setting about defending his Christchurch men’s open singles bowls title yesterday, his wife, Marie, was winning the women’s equivalent. So, at least for the next two weeks, the Linwood couple will have the distinction of being matchcing reigning champions. In the women’s final, played at Shirley, Mrs Watson beat another Linwood player, Denise Page, 21-14. The scoring was close ono
the early ends, but then Mrs Watson pulled away to lead 14-6 after eleven ends.
Mrs Page struck back with a string of singles and she trailed by only one point, 15-14, with three ends remaining. However, Mrs Watson, who had played exceptionally well throughout the three-day event, was not to be denied and threes on the nineteenth and twentieth ends gave her the title. It was her fourth centre title, and she needs only one more to join her husband as a gold star holder. In the semi-finals Mrs Watson, after racing to a 130 early lead, bad no trouble beating Gwen Carter (Fendalton), 24-10, but it was only five points on the last two ends that gave Mrs Page her clear 20-14 win over Vai Glystra (Burwood).
