This station supports scientific parties during the summer, and also makes meteorological observations which are transmitted to McMurdo Station for weather forecasting. The Dry Valleys are one of the few Antarctic areas free of ice and, consequently, are of great importance to scientists. The station was first opened in the 1968-69 season.
