Area health board change urged
PA Wellington Area health boards were given legal status last year and hospital boards should now “take the plunge” and make the transition, says the Minister of Health, Dr Bassett. The Northland Hospital Board should be the first to make a move, he said, in an address to the conference of the Institute of Health Administrators in Whangarei. Northland had been involved in a reorganisation exercise since 1978, he said. “I believe it would be fating if this region Should be the first to form an area
health board in New Zealand.” But there were other regions interested in reorganising their hospital boards and Health Department district offices, he said. He would not hold back other applicants while Northland made up its mind. Area health boards represented an opportunity for a region to look at its over-all health service priorities, he said. They were more than the amalgamation of hospital boards and Health Department offices.
