Birth defects
Sir,—Debendox is not the only drug suspected of causing birth deformities; there are others, and probably more to surface in the future. Also there are food additives and pesticides proven or suspected of causing deformities and/or cancers. While it may be possible for pregnant women to avoid using drugs, and The Health Alternatives for Women has some information on harmless remedies, this is obviously not the whole answer. Our concern is that increasing numbers of dangerous substances are being used in New Zealand before they have been proved safe for human consumption. How many Thalidomide tragedies are in the making now?— Yours, etc., CHRISTINE BIRD, for THAW. November 1, 1984.
