G.P. head welcomes new benefit

The increase in the General Medical Services Benefit for children would be' good news for parents, said the chairman of the Canterbury faculty of the Royal College of General Practitioners, Dr Peter Law. Dr Law said the increase — from $4.75 to $9.50 for a normal consultation for doctors who agree to limit their total fee to $11.50 — was an excellent move for patients. The increase would apply from February 1 next year.

He believed that most doctors would react favourably to the move, although some had objected to a maximum total fee’s being imposed.

Dr Law said he doubted that the introduction of a $1 flat charge on prescriptions would make much difference to patients, because there were exceptions for children, beneficiaries, and the chronically ill.
