Computers cheaper

Computers will be 15 to 20 per cent cheaper to most people because of the Budget. The 10 per cent wholesale tax rate is now extended to all classes of users. The National Government exempted specific classes of business users from the 40 per cent sales tax imposed by the previous Labour Government. These classes were put on a 10 per cent rate. This rate is now extended to all buyers subject to the sales tax (educational institutions, for example, are totally exempt). The price fall will also apply to computer add-on equipment, such as printers and disk drives.

Mr Brian Eardley-Wil-mot, of C.E.D. Distributors, Ltd, the New Zealand distributor of Apple computers, from Auckland last evening described the change as “The Labour Party, carrying on the good work the National Party started. They rightly see that the computer is now not so much a luxury as a necessity.”
