Few earlier impressions required revision after training at Riccarton yesterday. The New Zealand Cup rivals Belfe and Manchu were impressive workmates over 1600 m about 12m out on a firm course proper, and Tanalyse and Retsina showed the high speed that could carry them into the finish of the International Stewards tomorrow.
Manchu’s trainer, Noel Eales, said his grey could be “a lazy little fellow” but a good gallop in company was demanded because of the formidable staying task ahead of him tomorrow.
Belfe, with the outside running, and Manchu, showed sustained speed and power to complete 1600 m on terms in 1:40.8, the last 800 m in 50s, the last ,600 m in
and finished in 1:29.4, the
last 600 m in 37.85. Tanalyse and Retsina hurried in from the 800 m on the course proper in 47.45, the final 600 m in 36.35. They stayed on terms to the erid of an attractive Stewards trial.
The Canterbury Gold Cup The North Island-trained candidate, Red Henry, led Welcome Stakes rivals, Macloud by a neck finishing Sierra Sand and Exchequer, 1600 m in 1:43.8, the last ran out of the 1000 m chute 800 m in 50.85, the final 600 m and came up with 37 for in 38.45. their final 600 m.
