Belfe could improve spectacular Sangster record tomorrow

By

J. J. BOYLE

Mr Robert Sangster, principal figure in an internationally famous racing empire, plans to make his first visit to Riccarton tomorrow to see his colourbearer, Belfe, run in the Chemico New Zealand Cup. It will be surprising if the English-bred Belfe fails to reward Mr Sangster at least in some measure for his decision to make the trip from Melbourne for the first of the New Zealand major staying races of the season. Belfe took the first step towards achieving a Riccarton double carried off by Sirtain two years ago when she won the Benson and Hedges Gold Cup last Saturday.

Sirtain won his New Zealand Cup with 51.5. Belfe goes into tomorrow’s race with 51, and with the confidence of her Foxton trainer Paddy Busuttin boosted after an impressive final gallop yesterday. A win for Belfe would bridge the gap of 12 years in the record books for females. But when Kartika won in 1972 she was completing a hat-trick of wins for mares following immediately after Princess Mellay, which triumphed in 1970 and again in 1971.

Belfe will be ridden by Gary Phillips, who won the 1981 New Zealand Cup on Gold Bullion, a stayer from the Noel Eales stable which had won the South Australian Jockey Club Handicap three days earlier. Eales’s hopeful tomorrow is Manchu, the top weight with 55.5, and the mount of Noel Harris. Manchu carried 57 into third behind Belfe and Our Boyfriend in the Benson and Hedges Gold Cup. The drop of I.skg to his Cup weight could count for much at the end of 3200 m. But his longexperienced trainer would equally welcome any change to easier footing to capitalise on the grey’s present high level of fitness and form.

The Hastings-trained Our Boyfriend gets I.skg relief on the weight he carried to his close second in the Benson and Hedges, but his 53.5 still gives him plenty to do against the likes of Belfe over the longer trip. The most interesting newcomer will be Rushcutter, the Rotorua Cup second, a performance marked by his strength of finish.

Hopes for the first South Island victory in the race since Star Order’s year, 1979, might rest largely with Julie’s Boy. The Banks Peninsula Cup winner did not get into the act with Double Trouble and Silver Elm over 2000 m on Wednesday, but a drop of 4kg in the weights, and the step up to a longer trip could do something for his chances. North Island stables will marshal strong assault forces on the Movements International Stewards, second leg of the T.A.B. double and first leg of the T.A.B. treble. The South Island’s best will probably have to struggle to match Tanalyse, Retsina, and the three-year-old Sobay.

Tanalyse is a newcomer

at the meeting, but earned a trip south after back-to-back wins at Waipukurau and Trentham for Don Grubb’s Feilding stable before a third over 1200 m at Hastings on October 31. Retsina might have been flattered by the margin of half a length separating him from the winner, Kingdom Bay, in the Edward Lumley Handicap on the first day of the meeting. But Kingdom Bay, in also winning the Two Thousand Guineas since, lent further stature to his placed run over 1000 m last Saturday. The Avonside-trained Sobay was not equal to the : task of leading throughout in the Wrightson One Thousand Guineas, but was not seriously threatened for her third behind Canterbury Belle and Avana — a run that demands attention for her bid to win over 1200 m under 51 this time. The . Waimate-trained Peat might be the South Island’s best, as she also was in the Lumley when third behind Kingdom Bay and Retsina. Will meet winner Belfe 2kg better here and could well turn the tables. N. Harris. 2 0172 Our Boyfriend 8 53.5 Put up brave fight before going under by a nose to Belfe in Benson and Hedges. Down I.skg on the weight he carried in that one and capable of another good run. M. Barnsley 3 0334 Sirtain 14 53.5 Veteran, but re-' spected as a winner at the distance and for his 4th in Benson and Hedges. M. Gillies 4 0726 Third Degree 9 53.0 Followed up 2nd to Manchu over 2200 m at Trentham with 6th in Benson and Hedges. Easy track would brighten his chances. T. G Davison. 6 1545 San Lefair 3 51.5 Found Page Boy and company too quick at 1600 m in Churchill Stakes but 4th two starts back was over 2200 m at . Rotorua. P. Tims

7 8662 Barbedos 5 51.0 Newcomer • from Southland at the meeting. Last-start second was at Wyndham.. Might struggle at this level. M. Crawford 8 3221 Bello 6 51.0 Tenacious in sustained battle for Benson and Hedges honours. Won %eyond this distance in England, and in right place in weights to complete good double for the meeting. G. Phillips. 9 0318 El Queatro 10 50.5 Out of luck in his first bid to win this race. One of the veterans in this field, but not the least of the chances, although only Bth in Benson and Hedges. J. Collett 10 8600 Macloud 17 50.0 Fourth was his best in two previous attempts on this race. Did not show much on first day. C. Johnson 11 8376 Noble Jewel 12 50.0 Did not go at all badly for 7th in Benson and Hedges, but missed a place in weaker field on 2nd day, and hardly likely to improve. P. Richards 12 7522 Rushcutter 11 49.5 Has earned a start after good 2nd in Rotorua Cup. At right place in weights to become interesting newcomer at the meeting. R. Dye 13 2707 Ceilarmaster 4 49.0 Looks out of his depth here. Failed against lesser limits earlier at meeting. 14 9999 Flying King 13 49.0 Veteran with nothing to commend him for this. R. Taylor 15 3500 Macho Man 15 49.0 Another failure earlier at next meeting. 16 0920 Many Things 16 49.0 Down the track over 2000 m on Wednesday. G. Elliot 17 .1145 Mias Lincoln 1 49.0 Won over 2200 m in class 3 Marton, Sept. 22, but that no great confidence builder for this. Race 7 2.45 TAB. FORECAST 129TH CANTERBURY GOLD CUP $22,500; 2000 m

Race 8 3.25 TAB. DOUBLE TAB. TREBLE MOVEMENTS INTERNATIONAL STEWARDS $22,000; 1200 m 1 1350 Cadmium 6 56.0 Beat only one in Lumley Hep (1000 m on first day. No appeal on that run. J. Pankhurst 2 8 Ruvain 4 56.0 Did not get into the act in Lumley Handicap, but that run might have improved him. P. Tims 3 2113 Tanalyse 12 55.0 Won this distance at Trentham Oct 22, that following victory at Waipukurau. Interesting newcomer at meeting. G. Phillips 4 3549 Retep 9 *54.0 Has his limitations on "straight” courses. Weak finisher on Ist day. R. McCann

5 1 Chook a Rook 2 53.5 Won fresh up this distance at Winton meeting. This looks more formidable. J. Dowling 6 .55 Katiki Bay 1 53.0 Beaten off in 1400 m won by Noble Note on Wednesday. L. Didham 7 187 Dainty Dish 3 52.5 Won fresh up this distance at Rangiora, but two failures since don’t inspire confidence for this. C. Johnson 8 62 Retains 11 52.5 Determined finisher for 2nd to Kingdom Bay in Lumley Handicap. One of obvious places chances on that effort G. Elliot 9 7322 Tirana 5 52.5 Outfinished by Noble Note 1400 m on Wednesday. One of better chances of South Island sprinters here. B. Smith 10 1243 Peat 10 51.0 Best of South Islanders when 3rd in Lumley Handicap. Rates something of a chance on latest form. J. Collett 11 1263 Sobay 14 51.0 Back to 1200 m after 3rd to Canterbury Belle and Avana in One Thousand Guineas. Was sharp enough to lead to straight, and worth second thought at 1200 m. E. Griffin 12 5 Buffy Beaufort 7 50.5 Resumed at Geraldine. This looks too rich. 13 1200 Double Bank 15 50.5 Weak finisher after leading around home turn over 1600 m on first day. G. DaVison 14 5443 Nomusa 13 50.5 Third start at meeting. Over four lengths from winner (Noble Note) when 3rd 1400 m Wednesday. M. Barnsley 15 6 Omoto Lass 8 50.5 Resumed at Marlborough. No appeal at this level. R. Dye
