Windvale Gae relegated

W. R. CARSTON

Two bad errors of judgment by the Wingatui apprentice, Steven Turner, cost the Washdyke ownertrainer of Windvale Gae, Mr Cecil Stewart, a stake worth $1950 when the mare was relegated from first to fifth after an inquiry into the running of the Apprentices’ Handicap at Riccarton yesterday. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s judicial committee found Turner guilty of careless riding in that he allowed his mount to shift ground inwards twice in the run home when ridden with the whip and come into contact with Lady Glenshiel, co-leader with Windvale Gae around to the straight. Windvale Gae was first past the post by a comfortable half-length but the judicial committee decided that the two severe checks Lady Glenshiel had received could have cost her a winning chance and consequently she was promoted to fourth ahead of Windvale Gae. Turner’s two errors of judgment cost him a threeday suspension.
