Govt campaign on benefit swindlers

NZPA-AAP London Dole and supplementary benefit swindlers in Britain are pocketing almost £2O million ($53.2 million) a year, the “Daily Mail” newspaper reports. A Government probe at the Department of Health and Social Security offices in London showed that up to 64 per cent of claims examined were fraudulent. Departmental officials say that a similar picture is reflected nationally, the “Daily Mail” reported. “We believe almost £2O million is being lost nationally through bogus dole and

supplementary benefit claims,” said a spokesman for the department. “We believe on average 40 per cent of all claims are false. But some areas have a higher percentage of fiddling then others.” The inquiry was launched to justify the work of “snooper squads” and as a reply to councils who refuse to co-operate with investigators and accuse them of harassing the poor. Because of the fraud check, individual offices are now saving as much as £150,000 a year, according to the department.
