Award for bravery
A Prebbleton man, Mr W. J. Iremonger, was presented with the Royal Humane Society’s bronze medal for bravery at a ceremony in the Paparua County Council chambers last evening. The county chairman, Mr J. Y. Pethig, who presented the medal, said it was the first time such an award had been given to someone in the Paparua County. On November 6, 1982, a small car had failed to take a turn and skidded into a power pole near Mr Iremonger’s home. The car had flipped on to its roof and was on fire. Mr Iremonger was the first person at the scene-and he immediately crawled under the car and halfdragged a person from the wreck. Another man had then helped him to completely rescue the person. Before the other occupant could be rescued as well, the car had turned into a ball of flames, said Mr Pethig. “It was ah act of bravery.” Mr Iremonger received the medal and a scroll from the society.
