Firemen in Chch kept busy

Christchurch firemen were kept busy last evening dealing with a number of small fires, most of which were started by fireworks. However, the only victim of a relatively subdued Guy Fawkes evening appeared to be a teen-age girl who was taken to Christchurch Hospital by ambulance after an accident with fireworks in Cathedral Square. She had minor burns. A Fire Service spokesman said the evening was “fairly quiet,” compared with previous years. The busiest period was from about 7.30 p.m. to 10 p.m. when firemen went to 10 small fires, most of which were in trees, grass, and scrub. The fires were throughout Christchurch, although the spokesman said that engines were called to put out fires in scrub on the foreshore at New Brighton “quite a few times.” The Christchurch police also reported a quiet evening, the only incident being the illegal setting off of a rescue flare in St Albans.
