Rafter swept away
PA Gisborne An Auckland man was swept from an overturned raft and drowned during a
commercial raft trip on the Mohaka River on Sunday. He was Paul Duke, aged 36, of Remuera. The raft overturned about 2km inland from the Willow Flat bridge, west of Raupunga. It was part of a New Zealand River Runners expedition. A Wairoa search and rescue exercise was taking place nearby and about 60 men were brought in to assist the recovery of Mr Duke’s body, which had been found but was difficult to retrieve. The operation was completed before nightfall.
