Piece of glacier in competition

A chunk of Franz Josef glacier will be the subject of a novel competition at the Canterbury Show this week. A block of ice from the glacier will be on display in the West Coast Hall, in the theatrette, adjacent to Canterbury Court. The public will be asked to estimate the volume of water which will melt from the ice during the show. Tourist operators from throughout the West Coast have combined to stage an exhibition at the show to promote the West Coast. It has been organised by the West Coast Tourism Council and is the first time that local tourism interests have combined for such an event.

Craft demonstrations will form a major part of the display. They will include greenstone carving, wood turning, pottery, weaving,

soft-toy production and glass sculpture. Wares produced on the West Coast will be available for sale. The New Zealand Forest

Service and Lands and Survey Department will take part and there will be sections on coal, gold and recreation.
