Ballantyne’s Grand Prix

Apart from the teams competition, one of the main features of the show jumping competition will be the Ballantyne’s Grand Prix on Friday for A and B Grade horses. The grand prix is part of the New Zealand Horse Society Bayer Rintal circuit, and carries prize money of more than $550. One of the crowd favourites is bound to be Mrs Ngaire Lamb, from Southland, who will campaign two horses. The first is Naude, which, at the age of 20, is still jumping as cleanly and as stylishly as before. Her second horse is Beaumont, which is also likely to produce a polished round. Two other Southlanders, Malcolm McCall (Monato) and Mrs Donna Smith (Ernie-Mite) are also well rated, but there is also a strong contingent from MidCanterbury. Julie Srhoy, from Ashburton, has two mounts, Sila- ‘ mond and Samuel, which

have been performing creditably around Canterbury shows so far this season; lan Bell, of Rakaia, will ride the consistent Golan Heights, and David Hutton, from Timaru, will ride Spruce Goose and Flipper. Two of North Canterbury’s promising riders, Mark Crean (Hawarden) and Brian Costello (Waikari) are also in with a good show.

Costello’s ride will be Merry Orbit, recently upgraded to A, and Crean will ride Missouri, a horse he has completed with regularly during the last few seasons.
