Voluntary preparation

Hundreds of hours of voluntary work by farmers and members of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s committee are needed to prepare for the Canterbury show each year. Much of the voluntary work is spent getting ready

the pens for holding stock and tasks such as painting and general maintenance. The show is the association’s major event for the year and takes several months to organise. Plans are already underway, for next year’s show, although the major work starts about April after the association has decided what classes there will be. Mr Noel Woods has been the association’s director since 1980. He was previously assistant secretarymanager from 1971, and is also secretary of the New Zealand Sheepbreeders’ Association, which represents 17 breeds of sheep. The association’s executive officer for the last five years is Mr Barry Johnson. He is also secretary of the New Zealand Limousin Breeders’ Society, the Canterbury Sheep Exhibitors and Breeders Club, and the Canterbury Shears Committee.
