Australian stocks closed firm across the boards in active trading yesterday as investors responded to positive signals from abroad. The all-ordinaries index was 4.6 up at 770.7, the all-industri-als market was 4.6 firmer at 1123.2, and the all-resources index was 4.5 higher at 498.4. National turnover was 39.4 million shares worth sAustso.o million, with rises outnumbering falls by about two to one. Brokers said gold and heavyweight mining stocks were keenly sought after a ■ SUS7.SO rise in bullion prices on the New York market on Friday, and firm prices in Hong Kong and Sydney yesterday.
