Shipping news

A two-month stay in Lyttelton's dry dock ended yesterday for the New Plymouth Harbour Board’s dredge Ngamotu and the old steam tug Lyttelton. Both vessels have shared the dock and its facilities since early September. The Ngamotu is well on her way to being refitted with a new diesel engine. During the last two months the vessel’s hull has been stripped and sandblasted and all underwater .fittings surveyed. New propellers and a rudder shaft have been fitted and the dredge has been given two new rudders. The dredge’s new engine is due to arrive in Lyttelton from Timaru next week. A spokesman for Lyttelton Engineering, Ltd, said the engine would be fitted within three weeks, while the dredge was tied up alongside the No. 4 wharf. Work on refitting the Ngamotu was expected to take another two months, he said. Most of the dredge’s old steam equipment has been sent to the Ferrymead Historical Museum where it will be displayed as a working exhibit. The tug Lyttelton has had survey work completed in readiness for her summer sailing season which begins in several weeks. .

The tug has had her hull repainted and her tail shaft, boiler, and steering gear overhauled. Most of the work was done on a volunteer basis during week-ends by members of the Tug Lyttelton Preservation Society. ARRIVALS Tendai Maru (9.15 a.m.), 16,340, Auckland (P and 0).
