Bills jammed by snap election
Wellington reporter Several pieces of legislation relating to the transport portfolio were jammed in the works when Parliament dissolved early for the July snap election. Among them was the “Shotover Bill” giving the Lakes District Waterways Authority by-law powers to limit persons navigating at the lower end of the- river and to levy users. The objective of the bill was to allow the authority to impose a single jet boat operator regime on the Shotover. Other legislation which was held up when the House rose in June was a bill requiring all registered
owners of vehicles to specify an address to which services of notice and summonses could be delivered and another giving the Ministry of Transport safety responsibility for chairlifts and tows on ski-fields. The details were listed in briefing papers supplied to the Minister of Transport, Mr Prebble, on taking office. 1 “The most significant section of the brief is that which lists the legislation sabotaged by the previous Administration when it called a General Election, and the many decisions the previous Minister, Mr George Gair, had not taken,” said Mr Prebble.
