Kiwi out of Cup

NZPA-AAP Melbourne The champion New Zealand horse, Kiwi, is officially out of today’s Melbourne Cup. A member of the Victoria Racing Club stewards’ committee said that the decision to scratch Kiwi was made at 11.30 a.m. yesterday on the advice of a veterinarian, Dr John Bourke. The stewards said that Kiwi’s problem with a near foreleg was too serious to allow last year’s Cup winner to run in the classic at Flemington. Kiwi galloped at Mornington early yesterday, ridden by his trainer, Ewen Snowy Lupton, and was examined by three veterinarians before and after the run. Dr Bourke said that he was concerned about Kiwi’s injury which was sustained in New Zealand two weeks ago. Kiwi’s scratching means there will be 19 runners in the Cup, making it one of the smallest fields to contest the race. Cup preview, page 47
