Norman’s big win
NZPA-AAP Sydney Greg Norman may shirk to admit he’s in golfs millionaire class, but for the “Great White Shark” it’s the thrill of winning rather than playing for fat pay cheques. Norman pocketed sAust27,ooo after he cruised to an eight-shot victory in the sAustlso,ooo Toshiba Australian P.G.A. championship at Monash yesterday. But it was the title that motivated him.
The charismatic Queenslander gave nobody a hope as he dominated the final day with his fourth straight sub-par round of three-under 69 for a superlative 11-under aggregate of 277.
Way back in Norman’s slipstream on three-under 285 was the Gosford professional, Rodger Davis, with the West Australian, Graham Marsh, and the Queenslanders, Ossie Moore and Paul Foley, sharing third place on two-under 286. Norman, who turns 30 next February, yesterday achieved his goal by winning all of Australia’s major titles.
He landed the Australian Open in 1980, the Australian Masters the next year and in 1983, along-with the New South Wales and Queensland Opens last year. Bob Charles was the bestplaced New Zealander. He was seventeenth and won
