Table tennis
Avonside I and II and Riccarton I began the A grade summer inter-club table tennis competition with victories last Wednesday evening. Avonside I crushed Riccarton 111, 12-6, with Karl and Darren Entwistle and the national champion, Jan Morris, dropping just one game in singles play. Avonside II had a slightly tougher battle before overcoming Dallington, 8-4. John Richards, the former Canterbury titleholder, went
down in straight sets to the veteran, Dennis Kalin, who completed a highly successful night with victories over his fellow provincial selector, Brian Wilson, and Bert Thompson. Riccarton 'I was far too strong for Linwood, winning 12-0. Mark and Blair Lockhart teamed successfully with their father, Bruce Lockhart, to overcome Dave Mcßride, Nigel Maynard and Jeff Mason. Riccarton II had the first round bye.
