S.C. exam entries decrease

PA Wellington The countdown to the School Certificate examination is on, with 74,478 candidates involved nationally. Entries reflect the downward trend — from 76,705 last year — first noticed in 1979.

The 1984 round will begin on November 14 with English, again the most popular subject, with 53,450 entries.

Education Department figures show mathematics second in popularity with 41,152 entries, followed by science, 33,078, and geography, 24,514. Horticulture is a relative newcomer to the School Certificate curriculum and has increased from 1375 entries last year to 2326. This is the fourth year accounting has been examined and candidates are up from 11,780 entries last year to 13,733.

There are 14 internally assessed subjects this year (Schools decide which subjects they will offer).

The subjects include art, English, science, Japanese, and agricultural engineering.
