‘Nuclear fear a phobia’

NZPA staff correspondent Washington

An American psychiatrist has convinced the United States Government that opposition to nuclear power may be an irrational phobia. The Energy Department has now agreed to pay him $85,000 to see if these fears can be overcome.

The psychiatrist, Robert DuPont, runs a phobia clinic in Maryland.

“This fear is widespread, irrational, and aggressively exploited by the political opposition to nuclear electricity,” he said. “Fear persists in spite of the remarkable safety record of the nuclear power industry.” It was a paradox, he said, that more people (an estimated 40 to 50 per cent of the population) feared nuclear power plants than feared cigarette smoking.
