DEPARTMENT OF APPLIED SCIENCES Full-time courses to be offered in 1985 One year full-time course for Science Technicians: A one year course based on Stage 3 subjects of the New Zealand Certificate in Science (NZCS) which alms to provide s sound basis of laboratory practice and skills across a range of sciences. Applicants should preferably have Sixth Form Certificate or University Entrance passes in biology and chemistry. The course is limited to an intake of 12 students who are entitled to receive the Tertiary Assistance Grant. One year full-time course in Computer Studies: The general alm of the course is to produce junior programmers with a significant level of competence in commercial programming. Two options within the course — Commercial Programming and Business Systems — allow students to choose between emphasis, either towards traditional mainframe applications or towards the smaller business systems which the microcomputer has generated. The course is structured to allow participants to sit Stage 3 subjects of the New Zealand Certificate In Data Processing. Applicants should preferably have Sixth Form Certificate or University Entrance passes in Mathematics and English and are required to sit an aptitude test. The course is limited to an intake of 24 students who are entitled to receive the Tertiary Assistance Grant. DEPARTMENT OF LANGUAGES A OOMMUNICATION STUDIES Full Year Intensive Courses in Japanese The following courses commencing February have been specially developed for tourism and trade with Japan. One year intensive Japanese Certificate: (38 weeks x 25 hours weekly). Introduced in 1980. Already a good number of its graduates are well established In positions where their ability to communicate competently in Japanese is recognised and valued. ELIGIBILITY: School leavers and others with a background of study in Japanese to School Certificate or equivalent level. Applications also considered from people who have not previously studied Japanese but have qualifications/experience relevant to trade/tourism. Certificate in Advanced Japanese for Tourism and Trade: (38 weeks x 22 hours weekly). New course to further develop fluency, and to provide training in special areas (e.g. retailing, hotel reception, tour guiding, etc.) for persons who are already competent communicators in Japanese. ELIGIBILITY: Applicants will normally have completed the above one year intensive Japanese Certificate course, but applications also considered ■> from persons who have completed a university major in Japanese or have elsewhere attained a good level of fluency.
