Decision to study river applauded

PA Wellington The Council for Recreation and Sport has applauded a decision to study the recreation and tourism value of the Kawarau River before any decision is made on its future.

The study, by independent consultants, is part of a wider programme of investigations being undertaken by Government deppartments, said the council’s outdor recreation advisor, Mr Colin Abbott. Mr Abbott commended the Ministry of Works and Development in looking at all aspects of the river’s use before hydro development went ahead.

The study would be a thorough investigation of all aspects, including costs, staffing utilisation capacity, opportunities for using other parts of the river, and any other options, he said. The study area stretches 55km from Frankton Point on the shores of Lake Wakatipu to the BannockburnCromwell Road.
