Poor start in bridge
NZPA Seattle An arctic cold change in the weather brought with it a black day for New Zealand in the world bridge olympiad in Seattle yesterday. The New Zealand open team lost both its matches — to Poland 9-21 and to Israel 11-19 — and has dropped to 35th place with 106.75 points.
Poland, 172, has taken over the lead from Austria by one victory point with Argentina . hanging on to third place with 162.5. There was no play on the eve of Halloween. The New Zealand women’s team were well pleased to beat its traditional rival Australia by 1911 but then lost to the United States 11-19. The Netherlands holds its
lead in this event with 169 with the United States 161.25 in second place. New Zealand again improved to take twentieth place with 91.75 points. Earlier the open team lost to Panama (13-17) and beat Brazil (17-13) and Switzerland (16-14). The New Zealand women beat China 21-9, but lost to the Netherlands (10-20) and . Chinese Taipei (12-18).
