Project S.A.L.T. (summarise all lime trials) began in 1981, to bring together results from the many field trials conducted by the M.A.F. over the past 30 years. Project S.A.L.T. has culminated in a new lime recommendation scheme for farmers. As a result, lime responses can be predicted and quantified and the economics of liming can be evaluated in any individual farm situation. Project S.A.L.T. was a team» effort and involved Dr Doug Edmeades, of the Ruakura Soil and Plant Research Station, Dr Robb Pringle and Mr Graeme Mansell, M.A.F. Palmerston North, and Mr Paddy Shannon, M.A.F. Whangarei. To develop methods for evaluating the economics of liming, Mrs Jenny Ritchie and Mr Keith Stewart from the Economics Division of the M.A.F. were co-opted to the team. A series of articles has been written by the S.A.L.T. team to publicise its findings. The first was published oh October 12 and the second and third appear here.
