Women arrested
Eighteen Muslim women in eastern Turkey have been arrested for veiling their faces, according to newspaper reports. The arrests in the town of Golcuk highlight the return of the veil by many Muslim women. The custom is now widespread in rural eastern Turkey and is slowly being adopted in the towns. A Judge formally charged the 18 women with breaking a 1934 law on wearing the charcharf, the equivalent of the Iranian chador,but they were released to await trial. — Ankara.
