NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed steady on improved turnover yesterday after continued support for industrial units but resource issues attracted some selling pressure. The all-ordinaries index was 0.9 higher at 754.4. National turnover was 39.9 million shares, worth sAusts6.4M, and rises and falls about even.

Brokers said a 10-point fall on Wall Street, continued weakness in bullion prices and a poor performance by Australian resource issues on the London Stock Exchange overnight discouraged buying among these shares.

However, the market was boosted by speculative buying among situation issues on the industrial boards.

In the oil and gas sector, a BHP drilling report on the Challis 1 well in the Timor Sea indicating a stabilised flow of 4700 barrels was greeted with caution after the disappointing results of the nearby Jabiru field earlier this year.
