Fresh economic package wanted

A new Maori economic package is needed, fostered through co-operative production and enterprise, according to the leader of the Mana Motuhake Party and a former Labour Minister of Maori Affairs, Mr Matiu Rata, at the Maori Summit conference yesterday. He urged Maoris to study the Mondragon Experiment which had successfully set up co-operative in Basque Spain. Re-establishing and strengthening their economic base had become a matter of the greatest concern, for Maoris. The priority was to expand oppor-

tunities and create new jobs. The principle of the cooperative movement, such as those in Basque Spain, were in keeping with Maori ideas and values, Mr Rata, said. It would be better to spend some of the dole money on creating jobs that would eventually be owned by the individual concerned. He urged the setting up of a co-operative development agency to advise and help in the early stages. Maoris should adopt to co-operative principles as part of their economic and social commitment.
