Tridentine Mass

Sir,—According to your news item, the Pope has allowed the Latin Tridentine Mass to be celebrated again, “under special conditions.” As the bishops have known for some time, they must have decided what conditions. It appears strange to allow this Mass, again, but hedge it in with the restriction, “only on extraordinary occasions,” as if it were a deadly or dangerous x poison. Will you ask Bishop Hanrahan what these “extraordinary occasions” are, times and places? This traditional Mass has been a block to unity, and was changed for that reason, not the other given. Is this not a contradictory step? Am I unduly suspicious that this is a placebo, because the patient refuses the bitter medicine offered? Anglicans and Catholics could never have inter-Communion with this Mass.—Yours, etc., V. H. ANDERSON. October 17, 1984.

[The Catholic Coadjutor Bishop of Christchurch, the Most Rev. D. W. Hanrahan, replies: “The only information I have so far about the Pope allowing ‘the Latin Tridentine Mass to be celebrated again, “under special conditions’” is that which has been expressed through the media. Consequently at this stage I am not able to answer your correspondent’s question on what these Extraordinary occasions’ are, times and places.”]
