In Shakespeare’s great tragedy, the King of Denmark is murdered by his brother Claudius, who then marries the King’s wife, Gertrude, and dispossesses Hamlet, rightful heir to the throne. The ghost of his father appears before Hamlet revealing the treachery and demanding vengeance. Feigning madness to avoid suspicion, Hamlet rejects Ophelia, whom he had previously courted. Starring Derek Jacobi, Claire Bloom and Eric Porter. 12.15 a.m: NEWS. 12.20: CLOSEDOWN.
2.30 p.m4 UPSTAIRS, DOWNSTAIRS. Georgina decides to throw a party at Eaton Place while Lord and Lady Bellamy are on holiday; and the new Governess arrives in the middle of the riotous celebrations. (Repeat) 3215: GENERAL HOSPITAL. 3.50: THE WALTONS. When the Waltons teach sign language to an abandoned deaf girl, the love created by their concern results in re-uniting the child with her family. (Repeat.) 4.45: OMNI: THE NEW FRONTIER. A look at Omni vac, the first robot to act on instructions from a human voice, and the science fiction guru, Isaac Asimov, who discusses robots of the past present and future. 5.10: DIFFRENT STROKES. (Repeat). 5.45: News. 5.55: TE KARERE. 6.00: THE YOUNG DOCTORS. Sister Jeffries realises too late that she has become too involved with a patient.
6.30: SOLID GOLD. 7.30: AUTOMAN. A gossip columnist gets into an argument with a former star outside a Hollywood hotspot. She threatens him. He returns home and is murdered. 8.30: COMEDY HOUR. The Kit Curran Radio Show. A by-election in sleepy Newtown means media coverage, cameras, publicity and, as far as Kit is concerned, opportunity. (Repeat.) 950: EYE WITNESS NEWS. 10.00: FRIDAY FEATURE. “5.0.8.” (1981.) A bizarre comedy about a filmmaker with a bomb in his hands and the lengths he will go to in order to salvage the film. Starring Julie Andrews, William Holden, Richard Mulligan. 12.10: CLOSEDOWN.
