Moves to control bush clematis
The Nature Conservation Council reports that a group has been set up to coordinate publicity and action on controlling the menace of Old Man’s Beard, Clematis Vitalbo.
The publicity programme is planned for November. It will be aimed at making people fully aware of the severity of the problem, and how to identify and tackle plants growing in their own area.
There are quite a number of places in and around Christchurch which require a major, concerted effort to get the plant under control. The Noxious Plants Council is considering gazetting Clematis vitalba as a noxious plant once control measures are established. It is hoped that all who can will respond to stop the further spread and establishment of this most unwanted climbing plant.
