NZPA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed steady yesterday in active trading following conflicting signals from abroad. The all ordinaries index edged up 0.4 to 748.1, the all industrials marker slipped 0.9 to 1092.5 and the all resources index rose 1.2 to 482.1. BHP was steady at 10.20 while CSR was steady at 3.05. Among the industrials, AUC, for which Morgan Guaranty is offering 4.10 a share, advanced 10c to 4.45 in active trading while Nicholas Kiwi, for which Reckitt and Colman is offering 5.02, dropped one to 4.51. The banks continued to attract support with ANZ up 8c at 5.24 and Westpac and National Australia 5c higher at 3.90 and 3.45 while among property issues Lend Lease dropped 10c to 6.30 with Jennings and Hooker 5c down at 1.68 and 1.71.

Among the miners, CRA dropped 6c to 4.84, and Central Norseman and North Broken Hill were off 6c at 4.94 and 2.32.
