Wool values increase
PA Wellington Prices hit their highest point in the trading season so far at the Wellington wool sale yesterday. The market indicator stepped up to 373 cents a kilogram for greasy wool (500 c kg for clean), a cent above the previous peak. The indicator started the season at 369 c a kilogram, dipped to 343 c, then rose four times to 372 c before
yesterday. It must reac,. 376 c a kg to give sellers full recovery of the 20 per cent devaluation.
The bulk of the 14,000bale offering of new season’s wool, plus 8000 bales of Wool Board stock, was mainly fine to medium crossbred shorn hogget fleece.
Competition was strong in tone, with widespread support from New Zealand
merchant scourers. The principal buyers were China, Eastern Europe and the Continent.
Compared with the Invercargill sale on October 18, 31/34 micron fleece was firm to 2.5 per cent dearer, and 35 microns was firm, 37 micron and shear 33 microns generally in sellers’ favour. However 35/37 microns 75/125mm long, fully firm and bulky skirtings were in buyers’ favour. The adjusted weighted average sale price was 373.02 c a kilogram greasy and 500.43 c clean. It will apply from midnight, October 24, until midnight, October 25. The market indicator was 373 c greasy and 500 c clean. The following range of prices is based on a clean on-floor price.
