Eighth draw in chess

NZPA-Reuter Moscow The. eighth consecutive draw was agreed yesterday between the challenger, Garri Kasparov, and the reigning champion, Anatoly Karpov, after just 22 moves of play in the seventeenth game of their world chess championship. Only one game with Karpov having the edge of the white pieces has ended more quickly, and it now appears to be the challenger who has the ability to neutralise the advantage of the first move. Yesterday’s game was tranquil by comparision to the aggressive and errorprone sixteenth game, but in terms of match strategy it

was not an unexpected result. Kasparov did well to hold so easily and did so with the annoying ploy of using one of the champion’s favourite defences against him. There is little doubt that both players are feeling the strain. Nevertheless, the slow struggle back into the match by Kasparov does not change the fact that Karpov leads 4-0 with victory going to the first to win six games. The spate of draws has increased the tension and with play becoming untidy, Kasparov’s chances of scoring a point are somewhat improved.
