Milk
Sir, — The reported statements of Mr Brian Kimpton, chairman of the Milk Board, contain misleading terms such as “white milk, whole milk, cartoned milk, full-cream milk,” etc. Evidently neither Mr Kimpton nor your reporter, Hugh Stringleman, is conversant with the Food and Drug Act, 1969, which, was enacted for the protection of consumers and would-be consumers. There is no requirement that milk be “white”. Jersey milk is ivory in colour. If artificial colouring be added to milk, it is no longer legally milk. If milk be rendered less than whole, such as less than “full-cream,” it is no longer milk. If milk be pasteurised it ceases to be milk. It is an offence of strict liability to promote the sale of, or to sell as, or to label as, milk that which is not milk. No milk has been delivered domestically or sold by shops in Christchurch since May 30, 1958. — Yours, etc., PAUL MALING. October 20, 1984.
