Burning of club’s memorial
Sir, — There have been many emotive and irrational letters printed under this heading recently, so it comes as a relief to read the factual and definitive response by Larry Ross (October 20). It should be obvious to all thinking people that the New Zealand peace movement has nothing in common with arsonists or militarists, but, sadly, the New Zealand anti-nuclear movement is being smeared by the Spitfire burning. Like your 77-year-old correspondent, Mary Mclntyre, I saw the aerial dogfights over Britain in 1940 as I was serving in the R.A.F. at the time. It may surprise Mrs Mclntyre to know that many former servicemen, some of very high rank, are now members of the peace movement — a more fitting memorial than a replica aeroplane. — Yours, etc., R. L. PLUCK. October 20, 1984.
